COMPUTER APPLICATIONS
NEEDS ANALYSIS, GOALS, SKILLS & JUSTIFICATION
SENECA College of Arts and Technology provides certificate and diploma programs in International Business and Marketing.
This approach to instructional design follows the Dick and Carey model. Gagne and Taba models also contain some of these elements. This is to lay a foundation which is normally associated more with the transmission and transaction approaches to curriculum. I find that by reflecting on these guidelines, I do not get too vague and idealistic in my planning. It is in the latter part of the model that I deviate from the traditional path and veer towards the Miller-Seller Model, integrating an orientation that more closely resembles a holistic and transformational method. I my goal is to move from a course that might focus solely on computer-based competencies to one that is learner-centred and self-actualizing.
The required course, Computer Applications is designed to meet the NEEDS of students in these programs.
Professors NEED to provide department approved subject outlines describing learning objectives, evaluation procedures, required materials.
Students NEED helpful instruction in the art of delivering professional level business and marketing related presentations using computer software and other audio-visual aids.
Students also NEED to have skills related to the Internet and World Wide Web.
Students NEED to learn how to work independently and as team members.
Professors for this course NEED a range of teaching strategies for learners with diverse learning styles and multicultural backgrounds.
Delivery of this course NEEDS computer-assisted curriculum that allows learners to progress at their own pace can be adapted to a wide range of learning styles.
A computer-based project-oriented course will provide effective strategies to be used by students
COMPUTER APPLICATIONS will be a guided expedition through the necessary stages in the preparation of individual and team presentations and in the design and development of individual and team web pages.
Learners will be given introductory exercises and stimulation leading into self-paced involvement with the tools used for preparing presentations.
Learners will be given opportunities to produce well designed slides, outlines, handouts and overhead transparencies to use in presentations..
Skills developed in this course can be used to promote life-long career and learning techniques.
1. Psychomotor Skills - Learners will operate a basic computer, practice keyboarding and use the mouse for point and click operations. Learners are expected to come to the course with basic skills in the operation of a computer and word processing.
2. Intellectual Skills - The learners will make decisions as to procedures, follow instructions, and compose simple slide shows following templates.
3. Verbal Skills - Learners will be encouraged to take part in class discussions and to give valuable feedback to presenters using both spoken and written ideas.
4. Attitude -Participants will reflect upon the positive features of this learning process. Ideally, the learner will gain confidence in conducting planning and setting goals, in preparing professional presentations other essential documents, and in developing career-oriented web-pages. The course is designed to foster individual initiative and team spirit and cooperation..
The use of learning materials can be more effective when an interactive rather than a passive model is used. Existing materials can be used to encourage a self-paced process that engages learners interactively using the rich resources available through multimedia applications.
The professor will be able to work one-to-one with learners as they independently progress through the materials that are best developed individually and in teams.
