PROJECT TWO SUMMARY:
LIVE AND LEARN (PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT FOR DISTANCE LEARNERS) LIVE AND LEARN is a distance learning package for the course, Portfolio Development. This course prepares adults for Prior Learning Assessment, a procedure now being offered at community colleges throughout Ontario. The objective of PLA is to extend college accessibility to a broad range of adult learners.

The LIVE AND LEARN portfolio development course is based on a workbook currently in use at Mohawk College (written by PLA Coordinator, Roberta Burke). Four half-hour video docu-dramas were produced by TV Ontario. At Seneca College, Selia Karsten served as consultant to the TVO production. She adapted the study guide to reflect the TVO material. Karsten was responsible for the design, development and production of the CD ROM program.

The LIVE AND LEARN study guide contains lessons, assignments and samples of documents. The video programs provides a model for the process of portfolio development and gives motivation to viewers enrolled in the course. This series has been on air since the fall of 1994.

The CD ROM program was created as an aid for a core exercise in portfolio development - that is, extracting learning outcomes from life experiences. The program consists of four modules which illustrate this process. Each module gives examples based on the TVO role models as well as background theory and activities to reinforce the learning.

The development and design of the program was done on the Commodore 4000. Graphics were developed on the Mac and PC by students on field placement at Seneca's School of Communication Arts. These students also assisted with layout for study guide. CD ROM authoring was done in Authorware Professional on the Mac and PC at the Centre for Educational Effectiveness.

The LIVE AND LEARN project was funded by the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training. The package was distributed to Ontario colleges in fall 1994.
