Breaking open the filled Waste Mold
Sculptor:  Richard McNeill
Mold has been soaked in water and is placed on a large sponge or other soft cushion.

Remove parts of the mold in the reverse order of how it was created.

Remove burlap strips on sides

Use mallet and chisel very carefully

Next remove the  strapping

With mallet, soften ribs

Waste materials go into landfill - only the strapping is kept to be reused.

Remove ribs

Careful on seams

Do back side of mold first

Pull mold away from the piece

Patience is required

Front features emerging

Use a knife

or a chisel

or dental tools

Eliminate seam lines on the piece by working into the texture of the piece

All bits of blue need to be picked out
NOTE: If any details of the piece break off or get damaged in the process, these can be repaired.

To avoid needing repairs, it's best to work very patiently and carefully to preserve the integrity of the piece.
