Resources Shared in CTL1799 Summer 2007

Holistech2007 Resource Sub-conference
Group Discussion Resources

The resources here are in no particular order - it will be a bit like rummaging through a second hand shop to see what you can find - then you can create your own resource page or file with favorites and/or bookmarks to get you to the goodies you've selected. If you have others that came up for you in postings in other parts of the course that you think might belong in this collection, please send them to me - thanks, Selia skarsten@oise.utoronto.ca

Holistech2007
http://scholar.google.com/
It is a test or beta system to find scholarly resources.  It's good to use it in conjunction with the UofT libraries and scholar's portal.
It has many books (not all pages available) online.  The search function really great for the books.  For example, I may have a book, but sometimes the index may not help me as much as searching the text electronically.  I can also see sample chapters before purchasing a book.

I sent this video to my team but realized everyone could benefit from seeing it. It really puts technology in the classroom into perspective. Enjoy!

Children of my Heart by Gabrielle Roy. It's the story of a teenage teacher living in the 1930's and her relationship with her students.
Debbie Miller's Reading with Meaning. For those of you who are primary teachers this book is the key to helping our students comprehend what they are reading.

This article from the Toronto Sun was another stark reminder of how much work we need to do as parents and teachers to protect ourselves and our loved ones.  There is no doubt that children do not tell their families everything, so reading that 50% of children have email addresses their parents do not know of did not shock me.  Good article to read. http://www.torontosun.com/Comment/2007/08/04/4393054-sun.html

http://www.kinsa.net/.  As both a parent and an educator, it seems to be a good site to spend some time on, and to use at school, especially the section under Resources, Links, Internet 101 - a teenager tells his story of how his blog was used against him.  It has Canadian information for teenagers and younger age groups, plus for parents as well.

http://www.teachertube.com - like youtube but for use with kids and teachers

http://www.wikimindmap.org/ - this presents a visual mind map of wikipedia references.  See an example at Joan' blog that I follow.  http://eduspaces.net/vinall/weblog/182318.html

http://www.visuwords.com/  is another visual tool... A visual dictionary that would be great on the Smartboard.  You just type in a word and a concept map pops up with related words.

http://www.instructionalintelligence.ca/ is a great site to look at for general information about what Instructional Intelligence is and all the components that make it up - check it out!  Its a real friendly site.

I found this site for free graphics that some folks might like. They are all kind of a 'cute-sy' variety of country-style pictures, so they certainly won't fit for the purposes of all...but for the elementary teachers in the crowd they may be suitable someday, or for other purposes. http://www.countryclipart.com/home.htm

Are you truly up to date to learning technologies? The following site gives you a good overview of what are the 23 things to do for using Web 2.0 tools. This activity is very interactive and easy to follow. I have to admit that i haven't tried the Flicker yet, but will soon. I think this activity can generate some thoughts of the potential of using technology for future teaching.  Enjoy!

If you are using blogger, this step is needed after you have added the tag code in the body of your postings:

When I was setting up my UTORid, and actually trying to figure out what a UTORid is, I found this link really helpful.  From here you can get basic information, activate your account, verify that your account exists, change your password, and get links to help if you need it.  Maybe this is basic information but until I spent time searching for it I didn't know.

The resource that I am sharing is geared towards Math teachers.  It is from Utah State University, but their expectations are similar to the Ontario curriculum.  The site catagorizes online Math activities by strand and by grade level.  Check it out!!  http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/vlibrary.htm

Two really interesting education sites.  A Bronx teacher has an interesting site at: http://madtedious.blogspot.com/  (if you scroll down, she's added some great information on autism!)
http://www.rethinkingschools.org There's lots of compelling stats and information about kids falling behind, the limits of state-wide testing, etc.

Ideas in literacy. It is called Choice Literacy and provides innovative high quality resources for K - 12 literacy leaders/teachers. It also has teacher study groups and information on teaching reading, Writing, ELL and much more. Check it out.
http://www.choiceliteracy.com

Also this site provides 50 Writing Tools and podcasts on elements of writing. Cool! http://www.poynter.org/column.asp?id=78&aid=103943

If anyone is interested in setting up a guestbook, survey or feedback section to their web sites, you may want to check out http://surveymonkey.com/.  This tool allows you to set up a simple or complex questionnaire or survey without having to house it on your local server.  You can add it as a link from your web site.  You can join for free for a basic, although fairly good service.  I use the pay option at work, but for the purposes of this course, the free version is more than adequate.

Kids Click! It is an annotated searchable directory of websites created for kids by librarians.  You can search by subject, reading level and degree of picture content.  It is important to note that the site states "KidsClick! is not an Internet filter. It does not prevent client web browsers from being used to surf any URL address that the user inputs. It is intended to guide users to good sites; not block them from "bad" sites. However, it could be used in conjunction with a filter product where law allows filters to be used".   In addition, the site does not accept advertising as they do not believe that children should be targeted with marketing.  It's a  great start for the students who were learning how to search on the internet.  Check it out! http://www.kidsclick.org/

A website that's very popular with ESL teachers, especially internationally. Find ideas for games or activities to do with students: http://www.eslcafe.com/

An other survey tool is also cool. It allows survey, assessment, course based, password protected, one student one access -- for free. And it is a project of MERLOT Classics! Have fun with it. http://www.getfast.ca/

I really find this site fun and very interesting. There is a link to each country in the world and when you select a country you are provided with a variety of search engines which can be read in the language associated with that country. http://www.searchenginecolossus.com/

Math teachers will surely enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLuhPBuy6-0

Originally created for students for study week - you may find a few of these work for you as well. http://astralsite.com/learn/learningfun.html

Dewitt Jones and his article "Seeing the Ordinary as Extraordinary" is a true winner!

This site links to lots of articles (also videos)  that relate to the use of technology in classrooms.
